Beyond Recovery: Integrating Substance Use Treatment with Vocational Rehabilitation for Transition-Aged Youth (MPH Project)*

As part of my coursework at UCLA’s Fielding School of Public Health, I authored a grant proposal in partnership with a nonprofit organization applying for a Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) contract with the Los Angeles Department of Public Health. The "Beyond Recovery" program is a holistic intervention designed to address the unique challenges faced by transition-aged youth (TAY), aged 18-25, exiting the child welfare system. The program integrates intensive outpatient (IOP) substance use treatment with vocational rehabilitation, resilience-building activities, and peer support.

  • Key Features of the Proposal:

    • Designed a 16-week intervention combining IOP substance use treatment, a tailored vocational readiness curriculum, and a paid 260-hour internship program.

    • Proposed a 12-month evaluation framework to measure reductions in substance use, job placement and retention rates, and resilience improvements.

    • Grounded in behavioral theories, including Social Cognitive Theory and the Transtheoretical Model, to guide intervention design and implementation.

This project demonstrates my ability to design evidence-based, multidisciplinary public health interventions, collaborate with nonprofit partners, and develop strategic grant proposals that address barriers to care and promote sustainable outcomes for vulnerable populations.
